Shipping Container Homes Wall Insulation

Shipping container homes, while viable, affordable, and ecologically friendly, will require wall insulation. The product choice you make will greatly affect the longevity and comfort of the home as well as the budget and timeline of the build. Choose InSoFast insulation panels for the best solution all around.

Established in 2006 as a commercial-grade energy efficiency solution, InSoFast, LLC, offers insulation products that are as easy for the novice to install as the quality is high. You won’t need days on end of free time, specialized tools, or an entire crew of laborers. The money you save on labor (and the monthly utility bill) makes this choice the clear financial winner.

Incorporating Quality Insulation into Shipping Container Projects

Building a shipping container home is tricky because the unit wasn’t intended for people to use for anything but transporting cargo. The unit’s metal composition creates a tendency to change temperatures wildly and foster the growth of mold and rust. Insulation is essential to moderating the interior space with temperature, noise, and moisture control.

Fiberglass insulation, the widely chosen material, doesn’t work well for shipping container projects. The insulation is still permeable to vapor and absorbs water, and the frame takes up quite a bit of space.

InSoFast insulation products come in three different products perfectly suited for container projects.

CX44 Panels

The CX44 panel, meant for shipping container side walls, is thin enough to leave space within the container, follows an 11” repeating pattern that matches the corrugation, and is lightweight and easily installed. The built-in studs replace the wooden frame that conventional insulation requires. The installation procedure demands that you place each panel horizontally and connect one panel to the next at the tongue-and-groove notches in a running bond pattern.

Side Wall, End Wall, and Ceiling InSerts

Reaching max insulation is possible with InSoFast InSerts slid into the empty recesses of the corrugated sides and then covered with a layer of InSoFast interior insulation panels. The tight connection and included framing leave no spaces where thermal bridging can occur and no airspace between the wall finishing and the metal of the container unit.

The InSoFast PLUS option is also possible with this setup, amplifying the insulation strength even further by combining the InSoFast interior panel with a rigid foam board for a cumulative R-value.

CX-LP Low-Pro Embedded Studs

Studs embedded within insulation, the CX-LP studs provide the insulated frame you expect from InSoFast insulation without the bulk of the panel. For projects that don’t need electric, this choice will save money on the product and shipping. To install, you will need to apply InSerts and your choice of rigid foam board between the studs.
