Tips For Building A Shipping Container Home

Do-it-yourself kits are available for 20-foot and 40-foot containers

Many people who are building shipping container homes are looking for tips. One of the best tips we can give is to make sure the shipping container is insulated well. If you are wondering how to accomplish this, check out the InSoFast website.

About Shipping Container Insulation

Used steel containers can sometimes be purchased for as little as several hundred dollars apiece, but they can present some unique challenges if you plan to live in one.

  • Temperature Control: Metal is an excellent conductor of heat and cold. In winter, the interior of your container home may feel like an ice box. In hot weather, sun rays hitting the steel sheeting will quickly radiate heat into the container, making it unbearably hot and humid. Control the interior climate of your container by adding insulation.
  • Condensation: The inside of an uninsulated metal shipping container can feel like a tropical rainforest. Condensation occurs when warm air comes in contact with the cool metal. Without insulation, water vapor travels through traditionally framed walls like water through a sieve. And, along with all of the moisture comes mold, rust and corrosion.
  • Sound: Sound echoes inside a metal box. Insulating the container interior will help keep noise problems to an acceptable level.

Tips For Building A Shipping Container Home

InSoFast CX 44 shipping container insulating panels  and inserts are specifically designed to work with the walls in a shipping container. Each panel is 44 inches long by 24 inches tall and uses only two inches of space. This width of 2 inches is important because there's a finite amount of room inside of shipping container and you will want to conserve as much square footage as possible for living space.

Our insulation inserts are shaped sleeves of EPS foam that are specifically designed to fit into the corrugation insets of a shipping container. They are designed to be used in combination with InSoFast UX 2.0 and EX 2.5 panels.

Can a Shipping Container be Energy Efficient?

Our CX 44 shipping container insulating panel has an R-11 rating. It you need a higher value, try our InSoFast PLUS option, which allows you to layer locally purchased rigid foam board over the top of InSoFast panels to go from R-11 to R-21. For instance, if you want to achieve an R-15 rating, you would use our CX 44 insulating panel in conjunction with a 1” thick piece of rigid foam board. This system allows you to mix and match panels and different thicknesses of foam board to achieve any R-rating you're looking for.
