Indiana was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Miami, Shawnee, and Potawatomi. European exploration began in the 17th century, primarily by French traders and missionaries. Following the American Revolution, the area became part of the Northwest Territory, and Indiana was organized as a territory in 1800. The state was admitted to the Union as the 19th state in 1816. Indiana’s early economy was based on agriculture and trade, with the development of canals and railroads fueling growth in the 19th century. During the Civil War, Indiana contributed significant troops to the Union Army. Over time, the state became increasingly industrialized, particularly in manufacturing and transportation, while also maintaining a strong agricultural base. Indiana is now known for its mix of rural landscapes, manufacturing centers, and cultural events, such as the Indianapolis 500.
