Kentucky was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, Cherokee, and Chickasaw. Kentucky was initially part of Virginia but became a separate territory as settlers moved westward. On June 1, 1792, Kentucky was admitted to the Union as the 15th state. The state’s early economy centered on agriculture, particularly tobacco and hemp, and it was a key border state during the Civil War, with divided loyalties between the Union and Confederacy. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Kentucky developed horse breeding, coal mining, and bourbon production as major industries. Today, Kentucky is celebrated for its horse racing heritage, bourbon distilleries, bluegrass music, and Appalachian culture.
